Life is fleeting. It is precious, unpredictable and fragile.

Timothy Owen trod gently on Earth for just 17 years before returning his stardust to the Universe on 29 April 2020. He experienced life’s wonders and elation, its challenges and disappointments. A talented photographer, filmmaker and storyteller, Timothy lived life with passionate, adventurous enthusiasm. He loved and was loved.

Everyone’s experience of the pandemic was unique. For some, it was inconvenient – missed holidays, delayed plans. For others, loss of social connection and personal freedom came at great cost – loved ones kept apart, denied the comfort of touch, of presence, of rituals. Restricted to a funeral of just 10 friends and family, Timothy’s mother promised to curate an exhibition of his photographs to celebrate her son’s life so all could share in the beauty of his art and his legacy of kindness. Through this exhibition, she keeps that promise.

BURNING OF THE WOMAN

ALEXIS COSTELLO

Alexis lives in Bondi, Sydney and is mum to two girls.

After studying drama in London and performing on stage and in film she travelled Italy for several months falling deeply in love with the culture, language and art.

In her paintings, Alexis explores the complexities of being a woman and a mother, drawing influence from Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo and Turkish painter Hulya Ozdemir amongst others.

Using bright, bold acrylic colours on large-scale canvases, she examines themes of postnatal depression, and the relentless demands of mothering that coincide with the intensely profound love we feel for our children.

Her exhibition, Burning of the Woman, although explicit with themes of motherhood also explores femininity in greater depth. It’s a celebration of what it is to be inside a woman’s body, exploring sensuality, romantic love, friendship and relationship with self.

Alexis would be honoured to have you join her on Friday the 24th of March at the Tap Gallery, 1/259 Riley street in Surry Hills

Call for entries

In 2023 we will celebrate the 14th year of the prize inviting works in any medium.
No registration is required.
Artists will need to deliver their work and artist’s statement (not compulsory) to TAP Gallery by 6th March between 12 and 6pm.
