Benjamin Hogarth – You Betta Work
About me:
Hi, my name is Benny and I’m a 29 year old emerging artist, who lives in Surryhills, Sydney.
From a very young age I was always intrigued and fascinated with art. I would always sketch on a piece of paper or within a book. It wasn’t really until I hit high school that my passion really grew and evolved. Visual arts was always my favourite class, I took my art book to and from school most days showing my teacher what I had created the night before. One thing my art teacher had always said ‘you really should continue this after school, you have the knack for it, you’re passionate and it’s something you enjoy’. Now, in my adult life, it’s something that I do most days, whether it’s drawing or painting or even thinking about different concepts for new art works.

Title: You ‘Betta’ Work.
Betta Splendens or commonly known as the Siamese Fighting Fish are native to Thailand. These fish can typically reside in shallow pools, rice paddies and shallow moving streams. The Betta fish have a very special labyrinth organ that allows them to breathe atmospheric air directly from the waters surface. Because of this Betta fish can live in thrive in different environments and adapt to their conditions. Later after the species were found they were renamed to their commonly known name now “Betta Spelendens’ which roughly translate to ‘beautiful warrior’. For the last 2 years, I have been working to create a collection of art works which focus on the beautiful details of Betta Fish whilst being dedicated to my full time career, gym training, maintaining a social life, going on adventures and just living in the moment. This time has shown me that everyone can adapt to the environment they are placed in, where they can thrive and flourish in their own way, to which everything turns out beautiful in the end.

GIVE THE GIFT OF HOPE – an exhibition by Connie Godwin, Margaret Hogan, Andrea Holliday, Wendy Howie, Mez Truskett and Ani Danielian. 3-9 November
“Give the gift of hope”
OPENING NIGHT WEDNESDAY 5TH NOVEMBER – 6 PM.
Cheerfulness is an achievement, and hope is something to celebrate. Additionally, optimism is important because in so many difficult situations a successful outcome is determined by how much of it we bring to the task. The irony is, the more challenging our lives, the more a graceful depiction of a flower might move us. A beautiful painting can be all the more precious to us because we are so aware of how rarely life satisfies our desires. The tears — if they come — are in response not to how sad we are, but how pretty the art is. Art offers hope, and that is something we all need.
In this exhibition, six emerging artists come together to celebrate cheerfulness, hope and optimism. The giving of hope is the best gift of all. Simply, art makes our lives better.
Artists are Connie Godwin, Margaret Hogan, Andrea Holliday, Wendy Howie, Mez Truskett and Ani Danielian.
